Ten Horror Haiku | Denny E. Marshall

fear engulfs
as shown new home
a pine box

locked inside coffin
escape only to find out
in bigger casket

new voice mail message
“dead & unavailable “
since grim reaper call

zombies
get
ahead

pointed at forehead
barrel just as terrifying
as the tank attached

spinning on a wheel
near death realize knife thrower
is an amateur

keep running down road
cornfields might be bad idea
as scarecrows chase you

zombie fast food place
list new item on menu
brain bowls with free drink

fear the corn farmer
as thrown into large grain bin
full of hungry rats

group escapes zombies
hide in large warm metal pond
cannibals add logs

Wonder Lady | Ivan Jenson

Everybody seems so young
ever since you became
every age you ever were
in my memory…
aging sons and elderly
mothers share coffee
at Starbucks
shooting the breeze
killing time…
I never knew what to say
to you
and I admit
I grew tired of the fact
that you were mostly made
of long winded
shallow-breathed stories
and lore
and little more
and how life to you
was once one big communist
party
back when you stood up
to the man
and felt lucky
that your oldest son
my brother
was 4-F
and never
had to serve in Vietnam
I’m not sure if I can do this
without your left wing bravado
but who knows…
maybe I can

Tell-All | Ivan Jenson

I confess that you
once made everything old
and beautiful
in an incensed church
or long nap on a rainy afternoon
sort of way
and the rusted brass rings
of this world
were no longer
worth reaching for
only the long stretching
past held interest
as you chained me to
the pillars of your yesteryear
and everything was about
ancient relics
tiny trinkets, rings, stones,
Bach Partitas or buckets
of wishes to live
elsewhere
no place in particular
just anywhere but in
the graveyard backyard
that living had become
for you…for us
and only Fred twirling Ginger
brought a sunken smile
to your once stunning
face that in it’s hey girl
hey day
made my father
give up his dream of writing
the great American novel
in exchange for marrying
his Latin American destiny
in all its tempestuous
disastrous glory

Mom Incorporated | Ivan Jenson

Let’s arrange
just one more
meeting of our hearts
and our minds
you choose the time
and the place
and I will promise to
be there
with one of those
insufferably
trendy gratitude lists
some flowers for the dead
and the blood red wine of Jesus
for good measure…
you will be Lady Lazarus
and I will speak for
the bunch of us
you left like penniless
homeless orphans
singing songs from Annie
on the street corner
for the living
begging for just one more minute
with the mother of all inventions
who had, with your low-tech precision
manufactured a limited edition
assembly line of love
made by a Costa Rican
in the USA

Yet the Debate Continues | NilavroNill Shoovro

It is dusk
Not yet dark
Like the north sky
Stars are preparing
For the evening conference

She will walk along with her love
At anytime for their rendezvous
With a red rose in one hand
The other hand will remain free

Although the evening is special
Also for the stars
As they are gearing up
For the heated debate

The lovers have no idea
About these developments
They are so composed
In their secrecy

Eyes remain locked
Desires are dancing
With mutual understanding
They are so familiar with

Yet the debate
Continues without
Any conclusion
About love and desire

She is now glowing hot
The vowels start humming
Pages of histories-
Unfolding secret stories

It grows darker
Stars are now very agitated
She starts to unfold her alphabets
The primordial Womb
Will take over soon

Two-Bit | JD DeHart

Maybe all my words are
two-bit. The truth is never
complete. A poem is never
finished.
What if I stopped this one right
now? Would that be okay?
Experience is experience, wrapped
in one word (prestidigitation),
a phrase (well, God bless) or a whole
year of being (which, of course,
would be a long parenthetical).

Used to Be | Sherrie Faulkner

When the mother first held her daughter
And kissed her tiny brow; so sweet
She did not dream for her a future
That included dumpster diving to eat

When on career day, the young man read out loud
I want to be a doctor and stop sickness and pain,
He was not secretly planning to be an addict
And shoot heroine into his vein.

When a little girl thinks about a white dress
And the details of her wedding day,
She does not plan to try to survive
By giving her body away.

When the teen who was jumped into a gang
Finds himself with a gun to someone’s head,
He was once a boy of three
Whose grandmother read him stories before bed.

A young mother lays her baby down to sleep
On a roach infested mattress on the floor.
The tears in her eyes aren’t from happiness
Because she couldn’t wait to grow up poor.

So the next time you judge an individual
And start handing out labels so liberally,
Close your eyes and try to picture
The child that they used to be.

A Poem for Your Self | Heath Brougher

Encourage yourself in ways
no one else has ever thought of

write secret hymns
that you find by accident
like poetic balloons filled with helium
to raise you up like a rooster
calling in the Day

write catastrophes yet to happen
and then stop them from occurring
write the future you want for your Self
and then be the catalyst
which brings it to fruition

for all is connected—

a human mind can change sugar
into moss simply by its positive thought output.
