Sugar Maple | Roy Pullam

The noble limbs
Had been shelter
For birds and squirrels
The storm claiming
The tree
Helpless in a heap
Pinned to the ground
The leaves waving
A flag of surrender
He worked the pile
The chainsaw
With its aggressive growl
Chewing the wood
One large branch
Then the other
Falling the short distance
To the ground
In a plop
Snatched from its resting place
And put on the flat bed
Of the trailer
Green and brown together
Heading for the decaying mass
The community storm damage
How noble it stood
For fifty years
Shading my kitchen window
In the cold
And the heat
A constant
My leafy place
My quiet place
Where I spent
Many an evenings
Reading a book
Never thinking of the irony
That the fibers
Of the sugar maples
Often made the tracts
My eyes followed
While this one
Was my umbrella
From the evening sun
A stump now
The saw quiet
The last load gone
With just the sadness
For a lost friend

Pathways | Marie MacSweeney - Contemporary Poetry Website Featuring Notable Poems

Pathways | Marie MacSweeney

As if we were merely inept travellers wandering here
we chose to move along a path
which has no clear objective,
but only earth ahead, coiling into a tangled undergrowth.

Purpose is a fickle place which slips away
while we search it out, and we lose direction,
shuffle madly as we stray around a maze
of wet days, and nights without the solace of moon or stars.

Our boots and clothes are tattered now,
fatally frayed about the edges, and we cannot see
how sky and sea become snarled, and trees retrench
when we venture forward in this stubborn spinney.

But oh, the grace of it, to stumble upon sinewy headlands
and scorched hills, to embrace this new landscape
as it fans out before us, with no swank to it,
but only heat swelter and haze and struggling whin,

barbs ready to breathe discrete designs along our skin.

Houston 2017 | Roy Pullam

We have worshiped concrete
Making monuments
Of clover leaves and overpasses
Sacrificing wetlands and forest
To the deity
Of development
How the elements
Have risen in anger
Rains and floods
Hurricanes that blow
With rage
Across our false gods
Reclaiming the land
Tossing aside our efforts
To rise above nature
And to build
Our glass and metal shrines
How forces
Beyond our control
Made our efforts
To erect that air-conditioned world
That filled our chest
With false pride
Thinking our skills
Our marvels of engineering
Would overcome the weaknesses
Of our environment
Only to be smacked
Once again
With the backhand
Of humility

Her Vortex | G. S. Katz - Contemporary Poetry Website Featuring Notable Poems

Her Vortex | G. S. Katz

Summer
Contours of lust
All around us
Deep inside vixen
Secrets exposed
Her vortex
Revealed
She gives all
She doesn’t break easily
But
Don’t toy with her heart
She’ll take you down
And leave you broken
Better to treat her well
She’s the real deal
A beautiful soul
Walk with her hand in hand
She’ll be yours for the asking
Vixen
The essence of desire
Flight and elevation
Vixen
A rare wine to be opened
And to consume…

We danced around
The AIDS
That was killing her
She so thin
Her skin transparent
A cough
That rocked her body
A boyfriend
She loved
His indiscretion
Writing a death sentence
For her
She did not cast blame
Accepting her lot
Living with the shame
A family
Unable to accept
Unable to forgive
Citing the Bible
For the scarlet death
She would surely face
God’s punishment
For women
Who lay
Out of marriage
I hugged her gently
Knowing the frailness
The reed
That was her body
The last time
I would see her
Death at 24
Joining the other four
He so callously infected

Look Behind | P.K. Deb - Contemporary Poetry Website Featuring Notable Poems

Look Behind | P.K. Deb

Where are you going my friends?
Make sure that you are not enchanted,
Get a pinch on your bare hands
To check consciousness from being hunted.

Indeed, surrounded you are by the cheaters,
Recognise them by whom you are led.
Be cautious of the greetings of the greeters
And in acceptance between the good and the bad

Maybe, you are hypnotised by their eloquence,
Well transparent to expose your debilities,
Compelled to be indifferent to consequence
And unmindful to your potentialities.

Wait for a while and have a look behind
And a long breathing too to feel comfort.
Slowly the way you can bring in mind
That can build a future with self-effort.
