My Mother | Joan McNerney

How she must have missed
those green hills of Ireland.
Walking along hard grey
streets in Brooklyn.

Remembering scent of
grassy meadows hurrying
along ten long blocks
to climb the filthy subway.

Her marriage failed, her health
gone. Nobody seemed to care.
Her smiling days were over.
The unlucky are often alone.

Missing those sweet soft pastures.
On her way home from work
buying day old bread and searching
for dented cans and items on sale.

How she must have longed
for songs around the fireplace.
Another beautiful Irish colleen
torn from that emerald island.

All that yellowing—–
like Van Gogh’s portrait
of Madame Ginoux,
while from your grin of gums
two silver nubs brightly gleam.

Your eyes roll with an “oi vey”
shrug amid the swelling
while blisters bleed
an egg yolk stain
sunset to sunrise
over every bed pad.

We each take hold of a balloon limb
and look to you or your devoted
Chernobyl husband,
his rumbling Russian, that foreign
noise any heart can decipher,

and while we look, we hold
the going of golden Svetlana
in faith’s font of morphine,

the anguish, the light.

Update | Stan Morrison

you say everything is still okay
yet I’m not seeing it that way
what happened to compassion
now that it’s out of fashion

kindness and sharing have vanished
for the poor and those speaking spanish
swahili, yoruba, amharic and arabic
africans, inuit, hindi and aramaic

whatever happened to convivencia
tolerance, intelligence and paciencia
if you’re red, yellow, black or brown
is it really safe for you to hang around

everyone’s hoping for another chance
for a hero to come by and take a stance
to rekindle all the love that’s in our hearts
a nation of immigrants can play kinder parts
