Patterns | J. K. Durick

Begin again, put one foot in front of the other
and set out, out the door, into the car and then
go on. It works that way, first one thing then
the next, the pattern is set way before we begin,
began to follow it. It’s that way with so many
things, we write a word that demands another
and soon we have sentences, whole paragraphs,
chapters, on and on, out the door, in the car and
then go on wherever that might take us. Every
day begins this way – reluctance, second thoughts,
and then the inevitable commencement of action,
then on and on, like the pattern that is always there
waiting for us. We find, if we look, examine things
a bit, we find that we are animated more by precedent
than ambition. We stay in bed a little longer each day
trying to think of a reason, any reason to get up and
start again with little success – but we do, we go on
with it, even if we can’t think why.
