On the news,
there are flickering images
of a home. It looks like yours.
There’s an outbreak, another
wounding, another killing,
another case of abuse or base
disturbance. A five year old
was found toddling down
the road, drink in hand.
Try as you might, the glass
of eggnog is more interesting.
Until you notice the lights,
blinking blue, in your own
window and the house number
in close up is your own.
Strange how we dismiss tragedy
until it is our own.
