When drinking wine
late into the night
and flirting
with the spaces
of early morning,
it is important
to keep your wits
about you
as the eyes
begin to tear up
over things
that shouldn’t be –
or wouldn’t ordinarily be –
so sentimental.
Just catch yourself,
write another poem,
use the emotion in a good way,
and then take another sip.
