Woe Is Me | Ivan Jenson - Contemporary Poetry Website Featuring Notable Poems

Woe Is Me | Ivan Jenson

Nobody can teach you
how to be lonely
because it is a self-taught
ability and affinity
to various levels of self-pity
yet, certain kinds of music
can enhance that solo
ballet in the depth
of the valley
of your moonless mood
and you should just admit
it’s pleasurable to be miserable
to stew and brood
refusing all emotional support
as well as the sustenance
of home-made food
and to think it all started
because you misunderstood
what somebody said or meant
which made you
check into solitary confinement
and only you can
unlock the door
to set yourself free
for you are the prisoner
and warden
with the key

Waiting for the Last Time | j.lewis - Contemporary Poetry Website Featuring Notable Poems

Waiting for the Last Time | j.lewis

because the human body is not infinite
nor is it immortal at least not yet
the inevitable is only a question
of timing

perhaps it has already happened
with no way to know it
my father said goodbye and
it was sure nice to see you
wish you were closer
hardly anyone comes to see me
wish my kids were closer
don’t see you ‘old guys’ much
maybe if some were closer…

and maybe he said more
i don’t recall because
this was a litany on replay
cued by any break in the long
silence from california
washington
utah
and anywhere in new mexico
other than where he is

not that any of us mean
him any disrespect
or would ever think of offending
but life happens for us too
and there is always a cost
involved in every visit

it makes me wonder
if the complete lack of loneliness
that i feel about my own sons
and their infrequent contact
is just a way of warding off
talking the way my father does
fencing off a sense
of abandonment and
waiting for the last time

Living with Regret | Wayne Russell - Contemporary Poetry Website Featuring Notable Poems

Living with Regret | Wayne Russell

Profound brown leaves,
crushed underneath my
feet, like memories; swirling
and forlorn.
I dream of us and our children,
it’s the good times that I cling
onto in the noonday sun.
It’s the memories that shelter
me, from the onslaught of winter
woe.
It’s the knowledge of loneliness,
that mortifies me the most, lost
without my family.
It’s facing a craggy city, threading
a bleak needle of homelessness,
asleep in some derelict house, long
abandoned by inhabitants, encased
now by only the darkness and me.

Good Night Moon | Debra Sasak Ross - Contemporary Poetry Website Featuring Notable Poems

Good Night Moon | Debra Sasak Ross

Good night moon.
Good night stars.
I wonder tonight
Exactly where you are.
Are you happy
To be free?
Are you lonely
Just like me?
Do you wish that things were different?
Do you wish they had stayed the same?
Do you ever wish upon a star
Out there somewhere
Where you are?
Are you happy?
Are you sad?
Do you miss the love we had?
Good night moon.
Good night stars.
I wonder tonight
Exactly where you are.
