The Hat | JD DeHart

Are you the hat
that sits decorating upon
my head? Here
I was thinking I’m
no hat person. But
we all change.
One day, goodness knows,
I may be a cane person.
Monocle person. Top hat
person.
One day I may move
outside of introversion
to a one-man show.
All because of the fabled
hat.

The moon is a wonderful creature
The stars are amazing in their culture
Twinkling, the moon and the stars keep the night alive
A story believed without being seen.
Darkness, a friend I have
And plead flees if I have luck,
For it has my heart consumed
Making me seem a follower
to no clock…
When shall I see the sky bright
What shall bring me to the light
When the sun that makes every day hot
Have I never seen shining bright.
Nature! They say it is destiny,
Is it mine to stay in always with
frowned face?
Trying to smile, I feel I might get no change
Like this, is being under a cage
going to change?

Death of the Butterfly | JD DeHart - Contemporary Poetry Website Featuring Notable Poems

Death of the Butterfly | JD DeHart

Sure, at one time the wings were gossamer
and we had the promise of a beach vacation
and sure, the cocoon was lovely, if not a little
cramped and there was nectar.
Not in great quantities, mind you, but there
was nectar, but now –
the wings have been trampled, life has
happened once too often, the trees
no longer provide much shade, and we must
move on, let the balloon soar, and allow
passage, art, and time.
