Bushwhacked | Daniel Klawitter

“The rules of fair play do not apply in love and war.” –John
Lyly, Euphues: The Anatomy of Wit (1578).

Of all her many weapons,
it was her voice
that left me voiceless—
like sunrise on a battlefield
speechless with corpses.

I tell you that her words
were like war—
a skirmish of metaphors
wounding my already purple heart.

Ambushed and bushwhacked
booby-trapped and blown apart
in the jungles of despair—
I was captured
with multiple fractures
and was unprepared
for this guerilla warfare.

I am listed as:
a prisoner of conscience
a casualty of her
barbed wire kisses
and the double-barreled shotgun
of her cocked and loaded eyes.

She hardly even cried
when she pulled the trigger and said:
“This is war, kid.”
Now…
Go figure.

The New Normal | Judy Moskowitz - Contemporary Poetry Website Featuring Notable Poems

The New Normal | Judy Moskowitz

when the music stopped
a cello lost its bow
the soprano swallowed her tongue
falling to the ground
one by one
two by two
the numbers grew exponentially
the sound of shattered hearts
like broken glass
on a cold floor
when the music stopped
you could hear
high decibels of fear
on faceless people
endless ring tones
blood stained shoes
another new normal
on the dance floor

Peacefulness | Poppy Taylor - Contemporary Poetry Website Featuring Notable Poems

Peacefulness | Poppy Taylor

I envy – in
the way her lipstick contemplates
the contours of her mouth.
Always, for the first time
in unknown places, we danced.
Concealed minds, mingling
as the flowers
languish to impressions.
Never not for a moment – in the
time it takes to quieten
did we stoop
to raise the tempo.
Absent stumbles, persuading
dark ridges
that jade observer’s eyes
our favoured, parallel
minds
leaving misplaced
doubts, standing dormant in repose…
