I envy – in
the way her lipstick contemplates
the contours of her mouth.
Always, for the first time
in unknown places, we danced.
Concealed minds, mingling
as the flowers
languish to impressions.
Never not for a moment – in the
time it takes to quieten
did we stoop
to raise the tempo.
Absent stumbles, persuading
dark ridges
that jade observer’s eyes
our favoured, parallel
minds
leaving misplaced
doubts, standing dormant in repose…

Invisible expanses
Inner city ravines
“Don’t go to that side of town.”
Because having “sense” and not
Being determined by one’s use of proper grammar
Or lack thereof
Substrata of self-inflicted segregation
This mangled microcosm
Apocryphal declarations of caste
Relentlessly decaying
Esteem and identification inhibited
Eight hundred years before two hundred year slaves
The framework was being laid
No coattails
Drawstrings of sack cloths ridden
Led by their own
Followed by others
Decolonization to recolonization
Reappropriation to misappropriation to disappropriation
A mile in shoes
A mile on bare feet
The direction remains

We watch them on television
Watch them discussed
Whenever it suits the speaker
Fits the audience and the time slot
We turn on and off to their tune
Half the world is burning
We watch children crying
Real children crying – half a world
Away from us, not next door
Those children never cry, never die
Never feel the true force of our words
Talk about peace, talk about war
Imagine either, imagine neither
Distance makes it easier – we talk it
