Reminiscence | Meghna Chatterjee

I found our old quilt again, today
It’s lost its color and grace
The lace has worn down to a bitter yellow
Over the past few decades.
I traced our old quilt again, today
The passing time has softened
The sharp edges of bitterness
That comforts your absence.
I hugged our old quilt again, today
Ten years later,
And it still smells like your shirts
Faintly; a shadow of your arm around me
Swift and sleek, against the night.
I found our old quilt again, today
embroidered with
Too many memories
To keep me warm anymore.
So I set our quilt on fire
Then sat and watched it burn.

Slave Master | Ndifreke George - Contemporary Poetry Website Featuring Notable Poems

Slave Master | Ndifreke George

He never repeats a word
Yet the deaf must hear,
Cruelty and violence
Are his best attributes.
My face is well-coloured
By his supposed romantic touches
His roaring voice
Scares me out of my rat hole
And I stand to salute
Every whistle and call
Yet when he speaks again, Mr. Dandy,
The same slave remains the succor
The bin he dumps and spills alkaline milk into
More often than pleasantries,
Comes the reply, “Copy that”!
Just because I answer to his name.

A Beautifully Sad World | Chris Byrne - Contemporary Poetry Website Featuring Notable Poems

A Beautifully Sad World | Chris Byrne

The world is full of beautiful people yet we fail to see them.
They are the ones who sit in quiet contemplation,
Who have an air of beauty surrounding them,
Who never need anyone yet crave company,
Not out of need for companionship, but because they want to let Their light shine for those who can see it, hoping they’ll pick up A bit of it and make their own gleam brighter,
Often wondering if it was worth shining for those that never see or appreciate the light or if they actually see it; Yet still we glow brightly, a beacon in the dark for all those who don’t see, we continue to shine.
Even when we don’t see the beauty that surrounds us, we still try to put it out there for others to see, when we can’t see the light, we still shine, knowing that beautiful people don’t just happen.

The Falsities of Men | Chris Byrne - Contemporary Poetry Website Featuring Notable Poems

The Falsities of Men | Chris Byrne

Plagued by our insecurities
Our ever-growing greed and need
For things we don’t need.
Obsessions with wealth and beauty
Most never see nor realise
The true value of being, socially conditioned
To see and believe without knowing
A society of falsehoods
People are used, abused,
Material possessions are treasured
Life becomes less important
Social media takes over, falsities prevail,
Life takes a back seat,
Real life is being alive
Nothing faked, never for the likes,
Being human, observing with eyes
That see beyond the abyss.

Cold-Blooded | Ndifreke George - Contemporary Poetry Website Featuring Notable Poems

Cold-Blooded | Ndifreke George

The married men have killed the widow
A merciless beating to death
Deaf to her cry and plea
Her desire to be with her infant
And feed it to maturity
They dragged her along the tar
And tore her into shreds
Through the horde of voiceless masses.
Whose hearts had helped
Whose hearts had beaten them up
Whose hearts had raced after them
To deliver and set her free
Their hearts had treated her wounds
And nursed her to recovery
But their hands were chopped off
And helplessly they watched
Burying their faces in shame and pity
Their goodwill suffers limitations
Fear assumes the greatest prominence
So they watch her die
And suffer hunger from her absence

Our greedy and merciless leaders
Have killed justice
And have made a shameful show of the law
Which has gone unpunished.
